Finding Peace Through Supplication
Losing a loved one is the hardest of things we face in life, leaving us overwhelmed with grief, hurt, and confusion. We make various du’as from the Quran and Sunnah to ask Allah (SWT) to provide comfort and ease for the deceased as they depart the Dunya and begin their journey beyond. At Islamic Relief, we recommend seeking support from a professional if bereavement has left you feeling unable to cope or in need of someone to talk to.
Du’a Upon Hearing News of a Death
In Surah Baqarah, the second chapter of the Qur’an, Allah says that when struck by disaster, you should say:
[Qur’an | Surah Al Baqarah | 2:156]
[قرآن | سورہ البقرہ | 2:156]
A Muslim typically recites this du’a when they hear that someone has passed away or after experiencing a personal loss. It’s more than just a prayer for the one who died — it also reminds us that every soul will one day return to Allah, and that our time in this world is temporary before the Day of Judgement.
Du’a When Closing the Eyes of the Deceased
The Compassionate Act of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
Umm Salama narrated that when Abu Salama, one of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) close companions, passed away, his eyes were still open. The Prophet gently closed them and said,
He then made a heartfelt prayer:
You can recite this particular du’a for your loved one:
