Dua Before Sleep

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had a night ritual before sleep that’s recorded in hadith and varies in narration. Ending a long day with the remembrance of Allah (SWT) keeps faith at the forefront of our minds. His life is a model for us to follow in likeliness and practice.

Words of the Prophet Before Sleep:

It was reported in Hadith like Al-Bukhari that the Prophet would lay his hand under his cheek and supplicate: “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya.” Upon waking, he’d say: “Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhee ahyana ba’da ma amatana, wa ilaihin-nushur.” These duʿās, adhkār, and remembrances help us recite with conviction, yaqīn, and presence of heart.

A Prophetic Solution for Peaceful Nights

He told him to seek refuge in the complete words of Allah from anger, punishment, the evil of slaves, shayatin, their suggestions, and their presence at death.

“I seek refuge with the complete words of Allah from His anger and His punishment and the evil of His slaves, and from the evil suggestions of the shayatin and from their being present (at death).”

Therefore, you should recite the following if one experiences nightmares:

Transliteration:

Qul audhu bi kalimati’ llahi’t-tammati min ghadabihi wa iqabihi wa sharri ibadihi wa min hamazati’ sh-shayatin wa an yahdurun.

Translation in English:

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the madness and appearance of devils.

Timing and Faith in the Du’a

Somebody who recites this Du’a during the day with firm faith and then dies the same evening will be counted among the people of Paradise. Likewise, if it is recited at night with the same faith and the person dies before the morning, they too will be among the blessed.

Therefore, you should recite this du’a before sleeping:

Transliteration:

Allahumma anta rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa-ana ‘abduk, wa-ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wawa‘dika mas-tata‘t, a‘oothu bika min sharri ma sana‘t, aboo-o laka bini‘matika ‘alay, wa-aboo-o bithanbee, faghfir lee fa-innahu la yaghfiru-thunaba illa ant.

Translation in English:

O Allah! You are my Rabb. There is no true god except You. You have created me, and I am Your slave, and I hold to Your Covenant as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge the favours that You have bestowed upon me, and I
confess my sins. Pardon me, for none but You has the power to pardon.
